Can Mesothelioma Be Benign

A mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. It is frequently malignant, but it can also be benign. In fact, if benign mesothelioma is not treated, there are no symptoms at all. This can make it difficult to diagnose.

The cancer forms in the mesothelium, which is a layer of tissue that surrounds many of the body’s organs and cavities. These include the heart, esophagus, lungs, and abdomen. When mesothelioma is benign, it may never cause any symptoms or illness. If it does cause any symptoms or illness, these can generally be treated without surgery or chemotherapy. Typically, symptoms appear eventually and include enlargement of the abdomen from the fluid buildup around the intestines and problems with digestion.
